A group rests at the base of the Olympieion, or Temple of Jupiter (Zeus). A man stands in the centre while another smokes a hookah-pipe beside him. The Olympieion’s fluted columns tower above the group, with the Acropolis and Parthenon in the background. The royal party visited this site on 29 May, which the prince described as another ‘intensely hot’ day, on the final leg of the tour. However, Bedford returned two days later to take this photograph of unidentified sitters, perhaps with the intention of showing a more typical and ‘authentic’ scene at the historical site.

As a process it had only been invented in the 1850s, just over 10 years before it was used by Bedford during the Royal Tour with such skill
