The Dome of the Rock is both a shrine and a mosque. It is today the most sacred Islamic site in Jerusalem, and also holds great significance to Jews and Christians. The Dome of the Chain, the small structure adjacent to the shrine, may have been used as a treasury while the Dome of the Rock was being built. It was once believed to cover the spot that marked the centre of the world. As the future ‘Defender of the Faith’, a papal title first granted to the English monarch in 1521, it was important for the prince to visit key religious sites. The Illustrated London News claimed, ‘the prince entered the mosque and had this privilege of standing where no infidel had stood since the Crusades’.

As a process it had only been invented in the 1850s, just over 10 years before it was used by Bedford during the Royal Tour with such skill
