TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
The Osborne was the prince’s main transportation throughout the tour. The royal party also took trains, camels and smaller boats.
The prince and his party slept variously on board the Osborne, in embassy buildings or in private residences provided by local rulers – or they camped.
This was the camp set up for the Prince of Wales in the grounds of the British Consulate, Beirut, Lebanon. While rooms at the Consulate were prepared for the royal party, the prince requested this alternative accommodation through which he could better experience the local environment. His journal entry on 4 March describes his arrival at the camp: 'The streets through the town and outside of it were crowded with people who gave us an excellent reception, but we were nearly smothered with dust, what with the crowd and our own large cavalcade.'
