This title page is the first of four in Bedford’s photographic catalogue. Bedford’s album of 172 photographs featured in his London exhibition after the royal tour. The series was introduced as ‘highly interesting places never before photographed … from new and more picturesque points of view’. The photograph here is of the ‘Mosque of Omar [the Dome of the Rock] from the Governor’s House’, Jerusalem. Bedford probably chose this image to represent the collection because he was among the first to be allowed to photograph the site, which is sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims.

As a process it had only been invented in the 1850s, just over 10 years before it was used by Bedford during the Royal Tour with such skill
